ST. JOHN’S UCC HARTFORD

A QUIET ADDITION TO AN 1880’S ERA CHURCH TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONAL SPACE AND ACCESSIBILITY.

Several building additions have been added to the original stone and brick structure of the church resulting in a confused architectural composition. The program for the project includes providing dignified accessibility directly into the sanctuary, toilet rooms, meeting space, and a proper narthex. In addition to these programmatic priorities, this project aimed to provide enhanced architectural clarity to the exterior of the building with an eye on budget. The primary exterior materials palette includes a modular clay brick (selected to complement the existing brick) and a board and batten siding painted in a creamy white.

Sitework included the demolition of an existing house adjacent to the church and re-grading the site to allow for vehicles to drop-off at a new main entry that provides a level and accessible path into the sanctuary
