ANODYNE COFFEE WAUWATOSA

A REMODELING OF AN EXISTING STOREFRONT SPACE IN WAUWATOSA'S HISTORIC VILLAGE.

The first Wauwatosa location for Anodyne Coffee occupies a narrow commercial space within an existing building on Harwood Avenue and strikes a distinct aesthetic departure from the brand’s other cafés. The success of this project was made possible due to the close collaboration between design team and client whose dedication to design authenticity is evident in the final work.

The design language of the front façade takes cues from the original glazed-brick cladding that was discovered during exploratory demolition during the design phase. After the faux stone parge-coat was removed from the façade, the original cladding was found to be in poor condition and unsuitable for restoration. In response, the existing façade was removed down to the structure and new glazed bricks were sourced and installed with thin mortar joints to match the original. Custom limestone details were recreated and set into the white glazed brick cladding. The existing copper storefront was restored along with new wood panel infills below the glazing. The new façade also features a new wood cornice and natural gas lanterns flanking the storefront.

The interior of the project features a minimalist, yet warm design aesthetic accented with a material palette of wood and marble. Influence by a vintage bar discovered by the owner, a custom coffee bar was designed for the project along with wood trim details. The rear wall of the commercial space was opened-up with a pair of new glass doors leading to new exterior patio space.
